Our Evergreen College Medical Office Administrator student Richmond is on internship at Toronto Western Hospital. He is learning new procedures every day and he is able to use their software (EPR) to register patients with referrals and check the patients MRN in the system. Additionally, he was taught how to prepare exam rooms and call patients to reschedule their appointments.
His daily routine is to file patient charts, label them and check if patients’ MRN is the same with the folder’s MRN. I also prepare doctor’s patients the next day by compiling all the patient charts for new and old patients.
More than ever, employers are looking for experience as much as they are looking for a qualification. That’s why Evergreen College facilitates internships for nearly all of its students and for most of its programs.
The internships, ranging from 10 to 41 weeks (depending on the course), are a valuable chance for students to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom in the real world. Medical Office Administration students may help maintain real health records, Community Service Workers engage directly with real care patients in their everyday activities and Hospitality students have the opportunity to check in real guests in an upmarket hotel.
As well as practicing the hard skills that are vital to their job, students also practice the all-important soft skills such as troubleshooting, working effectively with their co-workers, taking initiative and demonstrating leadership.

Students meet with Evergreen College’s experienced internship co-ordinator (she has more than 10 years experience!) who will help set them up with one of the many exceptional host institutions available.

When you think of a typical school or work schedule, you will probably imagine the traditional “Nine to Five”. For many students however, who are trying to juggle studying with work, family and life, the traditional schedule is challenging if not impossible.

That is why Evergreen College offers not one but four schedule options for its students and has recently added a fifth option. Students can study during the day, afternoons only, evenings only, weekends or using the new two-and-a-half day option.

The two-and-a-half day option allows Evergreen College’s Toronto Downtown students to do two full days (from 9:30am to 5:30pm) and then then either a morning or afternoon class, depending on their chosen course of study. Students in the Business Administration in International Trading, Hospitality Management, Hospitality Operations and Computer System and Network Specialist programs can take advantage of this super-flexible new scheduling option with the possibility of more courses being added later on.
